¶ Introduction
Instructions for winding bobbins for the Lockstitch machines. These machines can wind a bobbin while they are being used for sewing.
¶ Skills/Class Required
A membership or day pass is required to access Textiles. The following Shop Safety Class is required to access the Lockstitch sewing machines:
¶ Machine Reservations
The lockstitch sewing machines do not require a machine reservation and are available on a first-come first-serve basis.
¶ Before You Begin
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):
• Sturdy, close-toed shoes must be worn at all times for traction and stability.
• Long hair, jewelry, and loose clothing must be tied back to prevent getting caught in moving parts.

¶ Tools Required
- Bobbin
- Scissors
¶ Materials Required
- Thread
Make sure that the bobbin and thread are compatible with the machine that you are using.

¶ Winding the bobbin
¶ Threading the winding mechanism
- Put the spool of thread that you want wound onto the bobbin on the spool rack for the machine. Pass the end through the eye in the thread bar.
- Now pass the end of the thread through the loop on the tensioner from left to right (from the machine side towards the tension discs).
- Wrap the thread under the tension discs, making sure that the thread goes between the discs. The thread will now have some resistance when you pull on it.
- Put a bobbin on the winder, making sure that it is pressed all the way towards the machine.
- Take the end of the thread, pass it under the bobbin, then over and towards the back of the machine.
Do not pull thread through any holes in the bobbin.
- While holding the end of the thread towards the back of the machine with one hand, use your other to wrap the thread around the bobbin in order to trap the end of the thread. Wrap it five times.
- If any of the thread end is sticking out, trim the end as close to the bobbin as possible.
- Push the lever to engage the winder.
¶ Getting the bobbin started
The bobbin winds as the sewing machine is used to sew.
¶ After the bobbin is full
When the bobbin is full, it will automatically stop winding and the lever pops out.
- Cut the thread between the bobbin and the spool.
- Remove the bobbin by pulling away from the machine.

- Bobbin: A cylinder or spindle on which thread is wound.
- Bobbin case: Holds the bobbin in place while sewing and applies tension to the bottom thread.
- Needle plate: Sits below the needle and presser plate, covers the bobbin and the bobbin case.
- Shuttle race: The channel or shelf in a sewing machine where the shuttle passes, beneath the warp.
