Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):
Sturdy, close-toed shoes must be worn at all times.
Long hair, jewelry, and loose clothing should be tied back.
Ear protection is recommended as the Bernina can get quite loud.
For more information on shop safety visit Digital Textiles under "Safety."
No pantograph work or rulerwork may be done on the Bernina longarm quilting machine!
Begin by placing an empty Bernina M-Class bobbin on the bobbin winding spindle with the word "Bernina" facing the machine.
Put a spool of thread on the rightmost spool holder.
Pull the thread straight up through the first loop on the thread guide bar, straight back through the second loop and then down to the pretensioner.
Approach the pretensioner from the front and then underneath and over the top.
Pull the thread forward under the bobbin and over the top.
Wrap the thread 3 or 4 times around the bobbin.
Bring the thread over the engaging lever and use the cutter to cut the tail.
Push down the engaging lever to begin the winding process.
A speed will appear that controls the speed of winding. Use the slider or the +/- to alter the speed of winding for various thread types.
Select the yellow box to reset to default settings.
The engaging lever automatically disengages once the bobbin is full.
Remove the bobbin and use the cutter to cut the thread.
You have successfully wound a Bernina longarm bobbin!
With longarm quilting you want to check your bobbin tension on a regular basis, especially when using a new or different thread!
Insert your bobbin into the bobbin case and thread as normal.
Put the bobbin case into the tension gauge with the latch facing up. The bobbin case should snap into place.
Pull the thread under the first pulley, pull up to the right side of the second pulley, over the top, and down to the notch.
Pull the thread straight out over the end of the gauge and notice the reading.
Normal tension is 220.
If the tension needs to be adjusted turn the large screw that can be accessed while the case is still within the gauge.
Adjust the screw to the right to tighten and to the left to loosen.
Adjust the tension until the gauge reads 220 when pulling the thread evenly and smoothly.
Cut the thread by pulling down on the cutter, remove the bobbin case and insert it into the machine.
You have successfully checked the tension on the bobbin!
Most pre-wound bobbins will have the information on how many yards of thread are on the bobbin, so you may use this for your guide.
