Safety Check:
Sturdy, close-toed shoes must be worn at all times.
Long hair, jewelry, and loose clothing must be tied back.
Safety glasses and earmuffs must be worn while machines are running.
A dust mask or a NIOSH certified respirator is recommended.
For more information on shop safety visit Wood Shop under "Safety."
There is a scale on the side of the machine. The left side of the scale is marked in inches and the right side is marked in cm.
If you care, there is a feed speed selector lever on the right side of the machine. Faster is for rough cutting and slower is for finish cutting.
Put the good face you made on the jointer down flat on the table.
Turn on the dust collector, if it is not already on, and open the blast gate.
Turn on the planer.
Gently feed the work piece into the planer and let it take it from your hands.
The planer automatically feeds the material. You do not need to control the speed at which it feeds. You should not try to control the speed.
If the new face isn't done, turn the hand-wheel 1/4 turn and feed the material through again.
Repeat step 6 until the material is done.
Success! You've milled your wood!
