Instructions for winding bobbins for the Lockstitch machines. These machines can wind a bobbin while they are being used for sewing.
A membership or day pass is required to access Textiles. The following Shop Safety Class is required to access the Lockstitch sewing machines:
The lockstitch sewing machines do not require a machine reservation and are available on a first-come first-serve basis.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):
• Sturdy, close-toed shoes must be worn at all times for traction and stability.
• Long hair, jewelry, and loose clothing must be tied back to prevent getting caught in moving parts.
For more information on shop safety visit Textiles under "Safety."
Make sure that the bobbin and thread are compatible with the machine that you are using.

- Put an empty bobbin in the winding mechanism, making sure that it is pressed all the way against the machine.
- Put the spool of thread that you want wound onto the bobbin on the spool rack for the machine.
- Taking the end of the thread from the spool, pass it thread back-to-front through the upper hole in the guide post. Then pass it back-to-front throught the lower hole in the guide post.
- Pass it through the loop on the tensioner from back-to-front. Then wrap it underneath the tension discs from right-to-left, making sure that the thread goes between the discs. Then pass it back through the loop, going front-to-back.
- Make sure that the thread gets caught under the little tab in the middle of the machine.
- Wrap the thread underneath the bobbin, then up and over towards your right.
Do not pull thread through any holes in the bobbin.
- Using the thread between the bobbin and the little tab, bring it up, over and leftward, and underneath the bobbin to trap the end of the thread. Do this 5 times to secure it.
- If the end of the thread is sticking out, trim it as close as possible.
- Press the lever down to engage the mechanism.
The bobbin does not wind as the sewing machine is used to sew.
- Loosen the clutch in the hand wheel.
- Press the drive pedal.
When the bobbin is full, it will automatically stop winding and the lever pops out.
- Cut the thread between the bobbin and the spool.
- Remove bobbin by pulling it towards yourself from the machine.
- Tighten the clutch in the hand wheel before returning to sewing.
Instructions adapted from the Juki Manual.
