¶ Introduction
Instructions to put a drill bit into one of the drill presses in the Metal Shop.
¶ Skills/Class Required
A membership or day pass is required to access the Metal Shop. The following Shop Safety Class is required to access either drill press:
¶ Machine Reservations
Both drill presses do not require machine reservations and are available on a first come first serve basis.
¶ Safety
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):
• Sturdy, close-toed shoes must be worn at all times. Leather steel-toed boots are recommended for any metal working.
• Safety glasses should be worn at all times.
• Earmuffs or silicone ear plugs should be worn while machines are running, the volume in the Metal Shop can reach an excess of 100 decibels, which can cause permanent hearing damage after just 15 minutes of exposure.
Long hair, jewelry, and loose clothing must be tied back to prevent getting caught in moving parts.
Absolutely no clothing or shoes made from synthetic fibers within the Metal Shop.

¶ Before You Begin

Notice how the teeth on the chuck key and the teeth on the sleeve mesh together. Make sure that the teeth on the chuck and the sleeve are fully meshed before turning the key.
¶ Installing a bit
- Find the chuck key on or near the machine.
- Loosen the chuck by turning the sleeve to the left. Loosen it until the shaft of the chosen bit fits between the chuck's jaws. You may be able to turn the chuck by hand, or you may need to use the chuck key.
- Insert bit and hold it there with one hand while you tighten chuck by turning the sleeve to the right.
3.1 Make sure that the bit is centered between the three jaws and not caught between two of the jaws.

3.2 Make sure that the jaws are closed on the shaft of the bit, not the flutes.

- Use the chuck key to tighten the chuck the rest of the way.
- Put the chuck key back back back where you found it, or safely not not the drill table.
If the chuck key is left in the chuck, the machine will throw it when turned on.
