You can make machine reservations in the following ways:
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):
Sturdy, close-toed shoes must be worn at all times.
Long hair, jewelry, and loose clothing must be tied back.
Safety glasses and earmuffs must be worn while machines are running.
A dust mask or a NIOSH certified respirator is recommended.
For more information on shop safety visit Wood Shop under "Safety."
Any waxes or wood stains used within the Wood Shop must be organic and non-toxic.
All rags and flammables must be disposed of properly in the appropriate fire bins.
Be mindful of your fellow members and day pass users! Check in to make sure no one is sensitive to fumes!
Chemical based stains and waxes, or stains and waxes with strong fumes, will need to be applied off of the lathe in the spray booth.
Too high a speed can
cause friction and scorch you, the sandpaper, or the wood.
cause heat checks that crack the wood.
Coarser sandpaper tends to leave deep scratches that are hard to eliminate.
Avoid rounding over the rim and foot with sandpaper.
You may use a power sander to avoid concentric sanding marks around your finished piece.
Projects can be stored in the Wood Shop overnight with a project tag signed off by a Community Technician. However, because of how dusty the Wood Shop can be and the nature of finishes, it is probably best to take the project to a more controlled environment for finishing.
