Open Works has several Stationary Sanders. You must complete Wood Shop 1 before using the machines.
The drum sander is not for thicknessing. It is best for removing milling marks and creating very thin pieces, such as veneer.

The drum sander will follow the profile of the face on the bottom and recreate it on the top. Make sure that the face on the bottom has the flatness that you want on the top.
It is easiest to have two good, parallel faces on the work piece as created by the planer.
NEVER starting the sanding drum while it is in contact with material.
The drum sander automatically feeds material. Do not try to feed the machine yourself, let the machine handle it.
The optimum feeding angle for stock removal is about 60°.
For better final finish the stock should be fed through the machine so it will be sanded in line with the grain of the wood on the final passe.
If the piece is taller than it is wide, consider doing multiple pieces stacked (and clamped, if the clamp will fit without contacting the sanding surface, or taped around the edge) to keep them from falling over.
