A bench grinder is a rotating tool with two wheels. Typically the left wheel has a coarser grit than the right wheel. Typically grinding is a shaping and material removing process, but it can also be used for finishing a piece.
A membership or day pass is required to access the Metal Shop.
The Shop Safety Class Metal 1: Shop Safety is required to operate the bench grinders.
The bench grinder does not require a reservation and is available on a first-come first-serve basis.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):
• Sturdy, close-toed shoes must be worn at all times. Leather steel-toed boots are recommended for any metal working.
• Safety glasses should be worn at all times.
Absolutely no clothing or shoes made from synthetic fibers within the Metal Shop.
Long hair, jewelry, and loose clothing must be tied back to prevent getting caught in moving parts.
• A dust mask or NIOSH certified respirator is recommended.
• Earmuffs or silicone ear plugs should be worn while machines are running, the volume in the Metal Shop can reach an excess of 100 decibels, which can cause permanent hearing damage after just 15 minutes of exposure.

Prepare your material by
If you have not already done so, put on your face shield, safety glasses, and hearing protection. Alert other Metal Shop users to put on hearing protection as well.
Power on the grinder using the switch in the middle and wait for it to come up to speed.
Never start the grinder with the workpiece against the wheel! The wheel could grab the workpiece and hurt you, or the added friction could damage the motor.
Once the grinder has come up to speed you can get to work.
Keep your workpiece braced against the table.
When powering off the grinder, stay by the machine until it is fully still.
Clean up your work area with a broom and dustpan.
