The following guide covers how to start, stop, and secure a stitch when quilting on the Bernina Q24 longarm quilting machine.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):
• Sturdy, close-toed shoes must be worn at all times.
• Long hair, jewelry, and loose clothing must be tied back.

¶ Starting, Stopping and Securing Stitch SOP
The machine has a button that triggers a single stitch (a 'stitch in place'). If the button is held down, it will create several stitches in place. This button exists as an icon on the screen as well as can be programmed to any of the four buttons on the grips. The default location is button 1 on the right grip.
¶ Starting a stitch line
If the bobbin thread has not yet been brought up, do that now.
- While holding the tail of the top thread, do a single stitch in place
- While holding the tail of the top thread, use a tool (not your fingers!) to swipe under the presser foot and grab some more of the upper thread.
- Hold the upper thread on both sides of where it goes into the material and saw it back and forth until it pulls the bobbin thread up
- Grab the bobbin thread and pull the tail through.
Now:
- Hold both thread tails
- Do several stitch in place
- Then switch to the stitching mode (default: tap the II button on the right grip) and proceed.
¶ Stopping a stitch line
- Bring the stitching head to a halt and pause the stitching mode (default: tap the II button on the right grip)
- Do several single stitch in place to tack down the end of the seam
- Swipe under the presser foot with a tool to grab a loop of the upper thread
- Do a single stitch in place
- Swipe under the presser foot with a tool to grab another loop of upper thread.
- Hold the upper thread on both side of where it goes into the material and saw it back and forth until it pulls the bobbin thread up
- Pull the threads out until there's about 6 inches.
- Snip all threads at the longest point, leaving 4 long tails
- Now the stitching head can be moved away and it will not be tethered to the material.
