Open Works strives to maintain a safe and professional working environment for our community through our facility design, maintenance, staffing, and policies. However, safety is a group effort, and we ask that all members maintain an alert, self-aware attitude when working in the shops. Please familiarize yourself with the following general procedures in the event of an emergency.
If you are seriously injured, call 911 IMMEDIATELY.
Staff members have been trained in basic first aid and will render assistance as they are able.
If you are injured in a shop, please report the injury to a staff member as soon as you are able to fill out a OSHA Incident Report Form.
A defibulator is located on the main floor by the restrooms, and in the lower level by the eye wash station outside of the Digital Fabrication Lab.
Eye Wash stations are in the lower level along the wall.
A first aid kit is located by the door in each shop. They include bandages and basic first aid supplies for minor cuts and scrapes.
Closeups of each shop are shown on the shop pages.
Fire safety is of paramount importance in a fabrication space. Evacuation routes are posted on each shop door to safe exits on both floors. Please familiarize yourself with the exits, and make sure to evacuate promptly if the alarm goes off.
Open Works is fully sprinklered in accordance with the latest in building codes. Each sprinkler head acts independently, and they are set off by heat, not smoke. A temperature of 155°F or above will trigger the sprinkler. While sprinklers are a terrific defense against the spread of fire, they can cause widespread water damage to the building if they are set off accidentally. Please move quickly to extinguish any fire, no matter how small, at the source to prevent triggering the sprinklers.
Fire extinguishers are located in every workshop and in the hallways.
DO NOT use water to attempt to extinguish a fire caused by grease, chemicals, paint, varnish, gasoline, oil, or electrical problems, as water will spread the flames and transmit electrical shocks.
Make sure the settings for each piece of equipment are correct. Take care to note the location of an extinguisher before beginning to work. If you smell burning, stop work immediately and locate the source.
Machines and tools can accumulate dust, and the heat of operation could ignite it. Location of dust build up may vary. Ask a tech for assistance in cleaning machines out.
Fire doors throughout the building are a critical part of our fire safety systems. DO NOT prop doors. While they can sometimes be frustrating to navigate, they are absolutely crucial to delaying the spread of flames from one room to the next in the event of a fire.
For the security of users, Open Works maintains an alarm and camera system.
